BREAKING: Youths on mass protest in Akwa Ibom, block major roads, no vehicular movements

BREAKING: Youths on mass protest in Akwa Ibom, block major roads, no vehicular movements

The youths are currently on a protest in parts of Akwa Ibom State.

Reports reaching News Express say the area completely taken over by the protesting youths is the major road linking Ikono in Uyo Local Government Area, and Abak.

According to our source, the governor, Udom Emmanuel, has built a new flyover at a junction on the road at a point known as Ekom Iman. During the construction of the flyover, there was vehicular diversion to another road leading to Abak and other local government areas in that axis.

The said road thus became unmotorable due to heavy vehicular movements and all pleas to the governor by the affected communities to fix the road fell on deaf ears.

According to our source, the new flyover is scheduled to be commissioned on May 29, and the deplorable condition of the road caused by the construction of the flyover remains.

"The youths of Ikono and Abak have come together this morning (Wednesday) to stage a protest. How can the governor destroy our only major road linking many local governments in the state and now wants to commission the flyover without fixing our roads as he met them? We are going to occupy the entire roads and wait for (governor) Udom to come and meet us here," said one of the protesters.

Efforts to reach the state Commissioner for Information proved abortive as his line was not available as at press time.

Man who hasn’t visited a doctor for 70 years shares his two top tips for staying healthy

Bernard Lawes

Bernard Lawes has never taken a day off sick.

In fact, Bernard says the last time he went to the doctors was in 1950, aged 18, to have a fitness test for the National Service.

And if there were two things Bernard would have to pick to explain his remarkable constitution it would be at least one hot meal a day and a good walk up the stairs.

According to Bernard, the key to good health really is as simple as that - although it may also have something to do with the fact he has never drank alcohol or smoked.

Not just any hot meal will do. The pensioner recommends “plain English food” such as chicken or beef.

He also puts his good health down to climbing 110 stairs three times a week in order to wind the clock at his local church.

Bernard says he has climbed the same steps each week for the past 44 years, accumulating a total of some 750,000 steps throughout his time as a volunteer.

Before retiring aged 60, he used to walk four miles to and from work each day to stay in good physical condition.

While many people opt for more strenuous forms of exercise, simply walking each day has numerous health benefits from building stamina to improving heart health.

“Everything I have ever needed has always been in walking distance,” Bernard, who has never owned a car, explains.

Man who hasn't seen doctor in 70 years reveals his secret to good health - North Wales Live

When I tell people I've not been to the doctor in 70 years, they can never quite believe it.

“There's no real secret, I think staying active all these years is the main reason behind it and having at least one good hot meal a day is important.

“I've always walked everywhere. You've got to keep active and going to meet people as well - that's what life is all about.

“My time with the church must have helped to keep me fit with all those steps.

“It was 110 steps up and down the tower to wind the clock as well as clambering up an iron ladder which was as tall as a house.

“I only did it to help out one time and ended up winding the clock for the next 44 years.” (Yahoo!)

It's not getting any Better for Yobe State as they Record 471 deaths within three weeks

Maka - African Languages at UCLA

At least 471 deaths have been recorded across five local government areas in Yobe State within the last three weeks.

The state task force on COVID-19 made the revelation on Tuesday.

The Yobe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, who is also the vice-chairman of the state COVID-19 Committee on Prevention and Control, disclosed this in Damaturu while presenting “Yobe State Verbal Autopsy Preliminary Findings” triggered by the recent reported mass deaths in the state.

Yobe Assembly orders government to shutdown College of Health ...

Dr. Gana said those that died were mostly elderly people.

He said the death rate was observed for three weeks starting from the last week of April to date, admitting that there were about 471 deaths reported within the period as indicated by the findings.

“57 per cent of those deaths had underlying chronic illnesses. More than 57% were aged between 50 years and above. The trend actually showed an increase in mortality”, he admitted.

He, however, noted that the geospatial maps showed no clustering mortalities as 90% of those that died had no travel history outside the state.

He said: “90 per cent of the cases did not have symptoms that were consistent with COVID-19.

“It was noted that 16 of the 471 deceased in the five local government areas revealed someone with similar symptoms. All the 16 persons were investigated and referred to health facilities. 3 out of the 16 made the case definition of COVID-19 and 13 did not meet the definition, they had other diseases.

“All the 3 persons were from Potiskum and their samples have been collated and sent for testing and all of the 3 are in self isolation."

A breakdown of deaths showed that, Damaturu had 86, Bade had 112, Potiskum 121 and Nguru had 152 deaths within the period.

NNPC sacks 100 contract workers

Home

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has disengaged the services of over 100 workers as the oil firm rehabilitates its refineries.

The workers affected are those contracted by selected contractors to work at refineries.

According to Punch, after the NNPC disengaged the contractors, over 100 persons who were contracted by about five contracting outfits were asked to leave.

The Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Kennie Obateru, said the corporation was working to revive the refineries and make them deliver at least 90 per cent of their refining capacities.

Explaining what happened at the facilities, Obateru said, “The people concerned are not our direct staff. We have contractors who supply us labour, they could be 10, 20 or more and they are just engaged for the period for which their services are needed. It could be one or two months, but usually not more than three months.

“So the contractor supplies the workers. But from what we have seen, our experience is that because a contractor is used to working with some people, each time we ask for supply, he uses some of these persons repeatedly.”

Footballer In Trouble For Killing Chicken On Pitch

A Croatian footballer, Ivan Gazdek, was reportedly been sent off for kicking a chicken to death and then trying to throw its limp body off the pitch.

The chickens ran onto the pitch (in a field) during a semi-professional match between NK Jelengrad and Jasenovak on Saturday.
In a video, Gazdek is seen getting angry and chasing the chickens away after they stormed the pitch while
When that isn’t enough, he appears to kick one, and it immediately falls to the ground.
Unphased, Gazdek is then seen to pick up the chicken’s body and, on the second attempt and in a blaze of white feathers, throw it over a fence so he could get on with his game.
Speaking to a Croatian news channel 24 Sata, he said that he got sent off by a referee for “unsportsmanlike conduct” and claims that it was not an intentional move, but that he was “nervous”.

The player said:

Believe me, it was not intentional. The result was far from certain at that moment and I was nervous. Chickens are constantly entering the field, so the game must be stopped. The terrain is full of faeces, these are unhygienic conditions.

I ran to the chickens a little to chase them away, I swung my foot and killed one by accident, f*** it.
According to the site he later wrote a note of apology to the owner of the chickens and bought her another one to replace the one that he'd killed.

Despite the poultry murders and being one man down for the remainder of the match, NK Jelengrad managed to come back and comfortably won the game 8-1.

Gazdek also reiterated that he does not hate animals, as he has had many pets, including a recently-dead parrot, so we shall take his word on that one. Jelengrad were in the lead at 2-1.

Student of Anambra State University rushed to hospital after she allegedly attempted suicide by drinking Sniper

A student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), formerly known as Anambra State University, was rushed to the hospital after she allegedly attempted suicide by drinking a popular pesticide called Sniper.

The lady, whose name has been given as Okafor Chidinma, was supposed to have graduated with the last set but is being held back because of an incident.

She took to Facebook before the act to leave a suicide note of some sort. In the note, she explained why the school is still holding her back from graduating with her mates.

She explained that her HOD invited her for a meeting where she was accused of stealing a book and made to face the school's disciplinary panel. She was also made to write a statement and replace the book in question.

Yet, she said the school has refused to allow her to graduate after four years of study.

She added in the Facebook suicide post: "I tagged my coursemates mostly because apparently one or two of them is responsible for this."

She continued: "Okafor Chidinma is out of the way. I hope your life gets better.

Thankfully, help got to Chidinma shortly after she consumed the substance and she was rushed to the hospital where she is said to be "conscious and in recovery."

South African man brutally stabs his 3-year-old son to death, says he "sacrificed him to God"

South African man brutally stabs his 3-year-old son to death, says he "sacrificed him to God"

A man identified as Thabang Ngobeni, 25, stabbed his 3-year-old son to death n a veld near the Bremer Street informal settlement in South Africa because he believed that sacrificing the child would "cleanse him of the evil that has befallen him"

The body of the boy, Mohau was found in the veld with multiple stab wounds to his face and chest.
“We were alerted to the situation shortly after 16:00,” said Hercules CPF chairman, Johan van Staden. “The body was found not long afterwards.”

Xander Loubser of Bestcare paramedics was part of the search party that found the child’s body.
“When we found him, his little body was already cold,” said Loubser.

Sam Ngobeni, the murder suspect's father told journalists that his son said he had taken the child into the veld to "offer him to God"

It is alleged that the suspect returned home later and just sat down on a chair, emotionless, his hands and clothes still covered in blood.
"He didn't try to run away. He just sat there and told us not to worry about Thabang anymore," a family member said.

The mother of the late toddler Thandi Ngobeni, 24,  is still in shock and struggling to come to terms. After undergoing troubles they could not resolve, Thabang and Thandi separated some time ago, but are still legally married.
"How it could have happened. I do not know what got into him,” said a traumatised Ngobeni. “I was so shocked, I did not know what to say or do. All I want is closure.”

According to family members Thabang apparently took Mohau into a veld near the informal settlement on Bremer Street where the toddler was physically assaulted and stabbed multiple times.

On that fateful day, Thandi was called shortly after 16:00 by her sister and a friend to tell her that something awful had happened to her son.

Although she wanted to go to the settlement where Mohau lived with his father and grandparents, her brother advised against it because he feared for her safety.

It was around 18:00 when a family friend told her that Thabang had killed their son.
Thandi felt at that stage like she wanted to cry, but could not due to the numbness and sheer disbelief she was experiencing.

She was also infuriated because she thought more could have been done to save Mohau.
“One question keeps going through my mind over and over again: ‘Why?’” Thandi said.

Thabang Ngobeni appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 4 November where he pleaded guilty to murdering his son.

He is set to appear in court again on 11 November to sign his confession statement so that sentencing can commence.

Giannina Maradona, the daughter of Diego Maradona has raised concerns about her father's health after posting that the football legend is 'getting killed from the inside'.

The Argentine legend's daughter, 30, took to social media to make the comments, writing: 'He is not dying because his body has decided so, he is getting killed from the inside and does not realise it.
'I do not believe in the parameters of normal, but that is far from the reality of what he deserves. Pray for him. Please! Thank you!'
Giannina, who was previously married to Manchester City star Sergio Aguero went on to say: 'Do you remember there was a zoo that allowed you to take photographs with a giant lion?
'You could go inside the cage and just about 'hug him'... They had him on pills, if not, it would be impossible to tame the beast. Anything similar to reality is pure coincidence.'
In a final post, Giannina Maradona shared a throwback photo of her as a toddler holding hands with her father as they walked onto a pitch. In the caption, she wrote: 'Give me your hand again, I can take you now!'

Explaining underneath the photo, she wrote 'I share this with you because it is great being painted on a wall.'
It has been claimed in several reports in Argentina that she is referring to her father who has publicly had recent health problems including knee surgery in July of this year.
Maradona, 58, who is the current coach of Gimanisia La Plata has also had a long battle with drink and drugs in the past.

BREAKING: Teachers, lawyers protest, block governor’s office in Calabar

Image result for teachers, lawyers protest, block governor’s office in Calabar
Placard-carrying civil servants on Tuesday protested the alleged removal of their names from the state’s payroll.

The workers comprising over 500 science teachers, 40 lawyers, ICT workers in various ministries, departments and agencies had stormed the gate of the office of the Accountant-General before they moved to the governor’s office some metres away.

Some of the placards they carried read, ‘Look for Ghost workers elsewhere, not among teachers’, ‘Stop punishing us’ ‘Pay us our salaries’, ‘We need our two months salaries’, among others.

One of the protesting teachers, Henry Abuh said “We came here because our names were removed from the payroll. We are about 500 science teachers. Our names were removed from the payroll without our knowledge. We did not commit any crime. We have served this government faithfully.

“Suddenly we didn’t see our alert. We heard rumours that we were going to be sacked two months ago. That was in September. We know that we were not sacked because we have not been issued any sack letter. The problem is that our names have been removed from the payroll. We have not been receiving salaries and our names have been removed from the payroll. And we have been teaching.

“Most of us don’t have the power to go to the class to teach. We pay school fees through this money. Among us here are lawyers and mostly science teachers. What we want the governor to do is reinstate us back. We want the SA Payroll to resign because he did not follow due process. The government is an organised institution. If they want to do anything they should follow due process.

“We went through a painstaking process before we were employed as science teachers and we have our confirmation letters issued to us by the government. We were surprised to discover that the SA to Ayade on payroll removed our names and since September, we have not received (credit) alerts.

“The state lacked science teachers and that was why both Senator Imoke and Prof. Ayade embarked on the recruitment of science teachers. We went through a very rigorous exercise and we were even given our confirmation letter. We have been working for two months now without being paid while our colleagues have been paid. We will not stop protesting until we are paid.”

Speaking on behalf of the protesting lawyers, Barr. Roseline Inameti said at least forty lawyers were affected.

“This is after working here for more than three years and after we had gone through the process of employment.”

Inameti said the 40 lawyers would continue to protest what she called injustice done to them, saying, “I was in Imo State when I had to apply for this job as State Counsel. I went through rigorous exercise before being employed. I cannot imagine somebody saying that I’m a ghost worker. We are supposed to be in the court to defend the state but we are here protesting because somebody decided to be mischievous.”

Addressing the protesters, the Permanent Secretary in the office of State Security Adviser, Sir Alfred Mboto sympathised with them and promised to take their case to the governor.

US presidential hopeful Joe Biden denied communion in church due to stance on abortion

•Former US vice president, Joe Biden

•Former US vice president, Joe Biden

Former vice president Joe Biden was reportedly denied Communion on Sunday morning at a church in Florence, S.C., where he was making a campaign stop.

The Rev. Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church told a local newspaper that Biden, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, attended his church’s 9 a.m. Mass. Morey said he denied Biden Communion because of the candidate’s political stance on abortion.

“Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that,” Morey said in a statement to the Morning News. “Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”

Morey did not immediately return a phone call and email request for comment on Tuesday.

The Catholic Church opposes abortion, but local priests and bishops in the United States have varying policies regarding whether to give Communion to someone who supports an issue such as abortion rights.

This is not the first time Biden has been barred from receiving Communion over his stance on abortion rights. Biden was baptized and spent his early years in Scranton, Pa., where the bishop there had reportedly barred him from receiving Communion.

Publicly, Biden has a complicated relationship with Catholic leaders. After he announced his presidential run in 2008, several U.S. bishops insisted he should be refused Communion in their diocese.

Biden said in 2012 that he personally opposes abortion. “But I refuse to impose it on equally devout Christians and Muslims and Jews. … I do not believe that we have a right to tell other people that — women they can’t control their body,” he said during a debate.

In the past, he has supported the 1976 Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal funding of most abortions. But earlier this year, he joined with other Democratic presidential candidates saying that he did not support the amendment, and he defended his record at a Planned Parenthood event.

Biden’s campaign did not immediately return a request Tuesday for comment on Sunday’s incident.

The question of Communion and politicians who support abortion rights has come up in previous campaigns. During then-Sen. John F. Kerry’s 2004 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, the archbishop of St. Louis forbade the Catholic candidate from taking Communion while campaigning in the area.

Catholic leaders consider ongoing and vocal support for legalized abortion as a grave sin with consequences. For instance, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) cannot receive Communion where he lives in the Archdiocese of New York. Cuomo’s support for the state’s new law allowing abortions later in pregnancy earlier this year raised questions about whether he should be excommunicated from the church.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s bishop, San Francisco’s Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, has suggested publicly that politicians who favor legal abortion should be refused Communion. But other church leaders, including Washington’s recently retired archbishop Donald Wuerl, have openly disagreed.

Catholics who identify strongly with a political party often express opinions that are much more in line with the positions of the Democratic Party or Republican Party than with the teachings of their church. Among Catholic Republicans and GOP leaners, 55 percent say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, which mirrors other Republican voters. On the other hand, 64 percent of Catholic Democrats and Democratic leaners say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, just slightly lower than other Democrats.

Biden and his wife, Jill, both regularly attend Mass at St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine in Greenville, Del., according to the Catholic news outlet Crux. (Agency report)
