Nnamdi Kanu is my godson, but secession is not in the interest of Igbos - Chekwas Okorie

- The national chairman of the United Progressives Party (UPP) Chekwas Okorie, disclosed that he was the one who placed Nnamdi Kanu in the political limelight by appointing him as the chairman of APGA in 2002
- Okorie stated that unlike Kanu, he had traveled extensively around the country numerous times and had profound knowledge of the location of Igbos in the country; enough to know that secession is not the answer
- Okorie revealed that in 2000, at the height of the Sharia implementation, he was the only easterner who visited the Igbo settlement in Gusau; and the trip had opened his eyes
Chekwas Okorie, the national chairman of United Progressives Party (UPP), has stated that Nnamdi Kanu’s agitation for Biafra would not do any good to the Igbo ethnic group.
According to reports, Okorie acknowledged that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was his political son, but he stated that he (Kanu) was not familiar with the place of the Igbo tribe in the larger Nigerian society; hence his blind agitation.
While speaking with journalists in Enugu, Okorie also debunked rumors of a connection between IPOB and UPP.

He stated: “First and foremost, UPP is a political party registered with INEC in line with the Nigerian laws to acquire power to improve the welfare of the Nigerian people.
"And in that registration, UPP like other political parties has a constitution derived from the constitution of Nigeria.
“It also has a manifesto, but it is the manifesto that stands it out from all the other political parties.
“So, haven said this, there is no special relationship between UPP and Biafran agitating groups, because we are aware that the Nigerian law does not permit a political party to have a direct relationship with any group whatsoever.
“And for Nnamdi Kanu as a person, he is more like my political son and he does not dispute that.
"I gave him political limelight and I exposed him politically and appointed him the chairman of APGA in 2002, and he remained loyal to my own chapter of APGA even during the crisis and up to 2011.
“And the only point of departure is the new orientation he has canvassed and continued to canvass which is, ‘we want to exit from Nigeria’, that is where we defer.
“I do not think secession will do the Igbo man any good.
"He is a young man; he has not been exposed to the Igbo location in Nigeria. I have had the privilege of traveling round this country for a minimum of 15 times.
‘I have had the privilege of meeting the Igbo settlements in Gusau, in northern part of Nigeria in the year 2000 where they have lived for over 400 years.
"And that was the year I was invited as a special guest of honour to the Igbo Day celebration in Gusau.
“The late Odumegwu Ojukwu was also invited; Dr. Alex Ekwueme was also invited.
“But remember that the year 2000 was the height of Sharia, so it was risky for most people to travel to the north, because of fear.
“But I said to myself that there are people leaving there and they are human beings.
"I was the only one from the south east that honored that invitation and I never regretted it till tomorrow. This is because it really opened my eyes.
“I also found out that it was the same year that the caliphate had their bi-centenary celebration in Nigeria. That means 200 years of entering Sokoto to establish the caliphate by their leader, Usman Dan Fodio.

"He came all the way from Senegal through Niger Republic, then to Sokoto.”

A MUST READ. is high time we tell them that we are no fools

T
he recent face-off between Mr. Raji Fashola (SAN), the triangular federal minister of power, works and housing provokes this write up he said that the senate had no right to increase the budget as is being done by the national assembly since the inception of democracy in Nigeria. We just have to settle this issue once and for all. This reminds me of Mr. Gani fawehinmi, Dr. Tai Solarin and Malam Aminu Kano of blessed memories. The present social critics are bull dogs who cannot bite.

The senate is playing God as members see themselves as the Alfa and Omega of the Nation, which cannot be queried or questioned by any citizen. Nigeria Senate will go on two or three Weeks holidays when the rest of us only go on two days of any public holiday. The whole Senators of Nigeria abandoned their legislative duties to be in court as a sign of solidarity with the Senate President.
The present Nigerian senate is the odd-one in the whole world where the opposition party is the deputy senate president. Even the United States of American, who celebrated 244 years of her independence on July 4, 2017, has no such history.
The truth is that the present National Assembly is more than worse. Just think of it! A Member of House of Representatives proposed in the House that those thieves who stole our money should be pardoned because they invested the stolen money in Nigeria. That shows the level of moral decadence in the Nation.
Perhaps these National Assembly Members don’t realize that the world is now a small village and that the rest of the world would Judge Nigeria by the level of the moral of those in the National Assembly.
It seems the current senators don’t care what happens to the Economy of this Nation. President Muhammadu Buhari, presented the year’s 2017 budget to the senate in October, 2016.
The Senate went on Christmas holiday without touching the Budget. When they came back they started playing politics with the lives of Nigerians. It appears our senators are lackadaisical to the suffering of Nigerians.
What is their pride? The budget for 2017 was just signed into law in June. It is in the life of this present legislative assembly they introduce padding into the budget. The question now is: whose purview is the preparation of the federal government’s budget? We just have to get it clear once and for all, as the senators cannot continue to put their sword of Damocles on the rest of us over their claim of performing an oversight function.

Not the executive and the legislative form the government, the Judiciary is also part of the federal Government. Since the judiciary never had issues over budget with the executive, the legislative arm too should submit its budget to the executive. If the national assembly has any addition to make to budget, they should lobby the executive like other arms of government, but not to see themselves as the final authority on the budget. I think the judiciary has to speak out. Do we have to go to court on every issue?

- Senator Bukola Saraki has been penciled for recall by some of his constituents
- The constituents who are acting under the umbrella of “Kwara Must Change,” apologised to Nigerians for producing Saraki
- The group said by electing Saraki, the people of the constituency voted for hunger, unemployment, more suffering and extreme hardship

Senate President Bukola Saraki's constituents in Kwara Central Senatorial District have announced plan to recall him.
The constituents who are acting under the umbrella of “Kwara Must Change,” while announcing their plans to recall the senate president apologized to Nigerians for producing such senator for the country.
The group as part of their reasons for demanding for the recall of the senate president said in a statement that they had no option that to call for Saraki's recall after realising the damage he has done to Nigeria.
"Realising the extent of damages done by the man we supplied to Nigeria as our contribution, we take full responsibility for his stay in the senate while representing us, though we regret his actions," the group said.
Here is the full text of the statement:
PRESS RELEASE
DATE FOR SARAKI’S RECALL-KWARA MUST CHANGE
11/07/2017
1. We the people of Kwara State are not happy with what we are getting from Nigeria, but we realized that from Nigeria, we can only get what we give. Since we are not satisfied with the result we are getting from the leadership of our nation, we have decided to review our input.
2. During the just concluded Sallah Celebration, KwaraMust Change group uses the opportunity of the public holiday to meet and deliberate on the state of the nation, as well as the current state of things in our dear Kwara state.
3. The leaders of our group, from across the length and breathe of the state all contributed to the discussion and in the process, we heard different tales of agony being experienced by our people on daily basis. Tears were visible in the eyes of many.
4. After careful consideration of all factors that are responsible for the stagnation of our nation’s progress, both at the state and national level, we came to a very sad conclusion that indeed, what ever suffering we are experiencing today in Kwara State is a self inflicted one made out of wrong choices. We voted for the wrong people, when we should have voted for change.
5. We came to the realization that, while the rest of Nigeria were voting change from one candidate to the other, bringing in new ideas and hope, we in Kwara didn’t vote for change, we voted for the same people rapi*g our state with impunity.
6. Our own change in Kwara, was supposed to be away from the corrupt ruling Saraki dynasty, which has remain a menace since our return to democracy in 1999, but we didn’t vote for change during the 2015 election, we voted for hunger, unemployment, more suffering and extreme hardship. The result is what we are witnessing today.
7. Furthermore, we in Kwara, particularly in Kwara Central Senatorial District didn’t only voted for leader of the dynasty Mr. Bukola Saraki to represent us at the Senate, he is our contribution to the nation and with him as the head of the legislative arm of government, we have inflicted unimaginable damage on the psychology of the Nigerian people by contributing, arguably the most corrupt politician Nigeria has today. And to make matter worse, he became the senate President, a sensitive position capable of truncating any positive stride being made by the sincere and most patriotic anti-corruption president.
8. We are sad that our contribution to Nigeria is the reason why the nation is bleeding; using the position of the Senate Presidency to hinder sincere fight against corruption, preventing genuine infrastructural development through misplaced budget allocation, while promoting fraudulent budget padding and now holding the nation to ransom, through acts of legislative impunity that is capable of derailing our fragile democracy.
9. Additionally, the leader of Saraki dynasty, who is also the senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District has abandoned his primary responsibility of representing us in Kwara Central. He is more concerned in pursing personal interest, which adds no value to our well being as a people. His over ambition and quest for personal enrichment is driving him nut, leading to several questionable actions and unnecessary confrontation with the executive arm of government. This selfish pursuit has now made the Nigerian Senate abandon its constitutional responsibility of screening political appointment to score cheap political point, by way of forcing the removal of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through self help. But this is not what we sent him to do.
10. Sequel to the foregoing, we would like to state as follows:
• We sincerely apologize to all Nigerians for electing Senator Bukola Saraki as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
• We also apologize for making it possible for him to become Senate President of Nigeria. We had thought that by having one of our own as Senate President, things would be better for us and the country, but the reverse is now the case.
• Realizing the extent of damages done by the man we supplied to Nigeria as our contribution, we take full responsibility for his stay in the senate while representing us, though we regret his actions.
• We dissociate the good people of Kwara Central from all his numerous acts of irresponsibility and declare that we are against the legislative rascality that the 8th senate under Saraki’s leadership is now known for.
11. In view of the above, it is clear that Senator Bukola Saraki has not been representing the interest of Kwara Central at the Nigerian Senate. It is also clear that he cannot represent the interest of the people, because he doesn’t care about the existence of the people.
12. We are therefore declaring that, in line with the provisions of Nigerian constitution, we the people of Kwara Central under the Kwara Must Change platform have decided to commence the process of recall against the Senate President to pave way for a more responsible senator that will represent us well, so we can begin to get better results from Nigeria.
13. With this release, we are putting our coordinators in the 52 wards of Kwara Central on notice, to with immediate effect, commence the process of recall by assigning representatives to all polling units within their wards in the 4 Local Governments Areas of Kwara Central, namely Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Ilorin South and Asa.
14. This appointment of polling unit representatives as well as mobilization for the recall should be completed within the next 14 working days and by August 1st 2017, we shall begin the recall process properly by presenting the recall register to the public for collection of signatures at the various polling units.
15. We are open to collaboration and partnership with local associations, community organizations, artisan union and other civil society organizations to ensure this recall process is successful.
16. We therefore calling on all groups within Kwara Central Senatorial district to join this patriotic move to free our people from a discredited senator that is not representing our interest in whatever capacity, but using our good name to cause havoc against us, as well as the rest of the nation.

Abdulrazaq O Hamzat
