UK granted 300,000 new visas to Nigerians in the last couple of years — British High Commissioner to Nigeria

Image
The United Kingdom has granted approximately 300,000 new visas to Nigerians over the past couple of years, according to Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Speaking on Monday, December 9, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Montgomery refuted claims that the UK’s immigration policies are overly harsh, emphasizing that Nigeria has significantly benefited from the UK’s visa framework. “I have to contest this picture because the UK in the last couple of years has granted around 300,000 new visas to Nigerians which far exceeds any other visas of relationship which Nigeria has with any other country,” he said. Montgomery attributed the positive visa trends to the post-Brexit migration rules, under which Nigeria has been a key beneficiary. “The trends have been really positive post-Brexit. Nigeria has been a major beneficiary of the post-Brexit migration visa rules,” he noted. The High Commissioner praised the contributions of Nigerian...

Bitcoin hits $100k, an all time high record Bitcoin hit $100,000 for the first time on Wednesday, surging to a new record after US President-elect Donald Trump unveiled administration picks believed to usher in crypto-friendly policies when he takes office in January. Atkins, a crypto advocate and former SEC commissioner, is expected to regulate cryptocurrency with a lighter touch than Gary Gensler, who leads the commission under the Biden administration. Gensler, who aggressively fought the industry’s expansion in the US, is set to resign on Inauguration Day. Bitcoin hit $100,000 just hours after Atkins was announced as Trump’s choice for SEC chair. The new milestone builds on the shocking crypto rise since Trump was projected to win the presidency on November 6, which fueled a $6,000 one-day spike in bitcoin that brought...

US judge denounces President Joe Biden's pardon of his son saying he misrepresented the criminal case The judge who presided over Hunter Biden's federal tax case in Los Angeles rebuked President Joe Biden for pardoning his son this week, saying he misrepresented the facts of his son's criminal case when he announced the move. In a brief order, U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi also called out the president for maligning law enforcement and the justice system in his rationale for issuing the clemency, and the judge even indicated that part of the pardon may be unconstitutional. The criticism of a sitting president from a federal judge adds to the condemnation by both Republicans and Democrats of the president's extraordinary decision Sunday to give the "full and unconditional" pardon after repeatedly saying he wouldn't. Scarsi, who was nominated to the federal bench by then-President Trump, took issue with the claim of unequal, biased treatment that the presi...

Russian warship fires at German helicopter sparking WWIII fears A Russian warship has fired at a German army helicopter over the Baltic Sea. The crew of the Russian ship fired signal ammunition at the military aircraft, the German Press Agency in Brussels reported. The Bundeswehr helicopter had been on a reconnaissance flight. It comes amid rising tensions in recent weeks between the Kremlin and NATO countries after UK and US missiles were used by Ukraine to attack Russia. Vladimir Putin has since warned that both nations are now "directly involved" in the conflict. Germany has spent the past year reorganising its military to get it "ready for war", in the words of Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, who has set up a new cyber and information branch in addition to the traditional navy, army and air force. Signal ammunition is typically only used by vessels in emergency situations. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who confirmed the incident at a NATO conferen...

Netflix reportedly leaves the Nigerian market after six years Netflix has reportedly exited the Nigerian market as the country’s economy records further collapse. Film maker Kunle Afolayan seemingly confirmed this as he revealed that Netflix has cancelled previously commissioned projects. The streaming giant recently cancelled its Nigerian Originals and an executive reportedly cited cases where the film studios had no electricity and had to rely on generators on set. Officials at the major on-demand movies channel told The Gazette on Wednesday, Dec. 4, that the worsening economic situation under President Bola Tinubu made the decision inevitable. “We’re exiting the Nigerian market,” an official said under anonymity, pending an official announcement. “We’ve lost too many paying subscribers, and the exchange rate of naira against the American dollar also did not help us in any way.” The development came barely six years after Netflix entered Africa’s largest economy with the productio...
